The Affirmations Collection
Affirming our imperfect selves
For the past several years, I have been exploring my relationship with my inner dialog, a voice that is oftentimes more critical than supportive. Can you relate?
I decided to create a series of watercolor and calligraphy designs to lift up some of the phrases of affirmation that I have personally found helpful to the process of rewriting my inner narrative and change the way I view the world around me.
In this post I’ll take you behind the scenes at the year-long process to create my Affirmations collection, ten designs that feature phrases I have found helpful to my own healing, mental health and self care.
Behind the scenes of my artistic process
I used a watercolor spray-paint process to create the backgrounds. To do this, I use diluted liquid watercolor in spray bottles, salt, leaves, cotton webbing and other found materials to create texture. I usually paint outside in my backyard where I can be really messy with my paints!
When the paintings are dry, I dust off the salt, leaves and other materials, then scan the paintings to digitize them. During this process, I try to keep the colors and textures as true to the real painting as possible.
Then I create the lettering by hand in modern calligraphy. For this project, I used my iPad, Apple Pencil and Procreate. My favorite Procreate calligraphy brush is called Molly’s Favorite Nib (aptly named!), from Molly Suber Thorpe. Check it out here.
Then I use Photoshop to create a montage with the watercolor painting as the background and the calligraphy on top.
Introducing the Affirmations Collection
Over the next few months, I will release the Affirmations collection one at a time, as art prints and on everyday products that you can use as a loving reminder throughout your day.
