Finding beauty in the mundane

I remember our pantry when I was growing up. It was not in the kitchen, but in the closet in the adjacent family room. My mom would ask me to help her by fetching whatever ingredient was needed from the pantry while she was making dinner.

The closet also contained other family treasures, such as my mom’s impressive vinyl collection and numerous family photo albums. I would pull the string that turned on the light, then turn my attention to the shelves that lined the left side of the closet. These shelves held various canned goods, boxed cake mixes and other ingredients that were a mystery to me as a kid.

One year, my mom got a label maker. With fervor, she labeled everything in the house, including the pantry. Suddenly it was a lot easier to find something in that chilly pantry closet! I am certain this is where my love for labels emerged.

While I don’t own my own label maker, I do like to make my own labels. Usually, I just use blue painter’s tape and a permanent marker, which sticks well to the glass jars I use in my own pantry. I love to shop in bulk, and this means my pantry is filled with glass jars with odd-looking blue tape labels. Recently, I decided to spruce up my pantry by making my own calligraphy and illustrated labels.
