Signs of Protest

My body, my choice.

Trans rights are human rights.

Abortion IS health care.

Im/migration is beautiful. 🦋

As a politically liberal and progressive artist, illustrator, and calligrapher, I feel a calling to create signs of protest.

Here in this post, I am sharing a free template for a protest sign you can use to show your own support for the right to choose what happens to our own bodies.

Materials

materials for making a protest sign
  • Pencil

  • Permanent marker, paint pen, or alcohol-based markers (like Tombow ABT brush pens)

  • Sign board: I prefer foam core or corrugated sign board, instead of cardboard. Recycling an old yard sign is a good, free option.

  • Totally optional:

    • Printer that can print 11”x14” paper

    • Graphite transfer paper

How to make it

Start by creating a design for your phrase. I created this design in modern calligraphy on my iPad using Procreate and Apple Pencil.

Transfer design to your sign

For my sign, I printed my design on 11”x14” paper. Then I used graphite paper to trace the lettering design onto my signage material. See photo.

Create the sign lettering

Once the design is transferred, go over it with permanent marker. For my sign, I used a Tombow ABT dual-tip brush pen in black. It’s important to use a marker that won’t run in rain, snow, or whatever weather you encounter!

Use your voice.

Once your sign is complete, use it to share your perspectives with the world.
