Botanical Illustration with Ink and Watercolor

A full-day workshop with Molly Chidsey

Do you love plants? Learn how to create ink-and-watercolor botanical illustrations with a flexible style that you can do indoors or outside.

Together we will learn techniques to sketch, ink, and paint botanicals from live plants, leaves, and flowers. You’ll then learn how to take your botanical sketching practice outside to your own garden, neighborhood, or hike.

Samples of botanical illustrations from my own sketchbook.

What you will learn

In this workshop, you will learn techniques for creating botanical sketches and illustrations, and go home with an illustration of your own creation. Including:

  • What supplies to use; how to see the shape of plants; creating a composition.

  • How to create a rough sketch in pencil; how to capture the “gesture” of a plant.

  • Options for inking your illustration: monoline pens, pointed pen and ink.

  • Adding color to your illustration with watercolor.

  • Options for annotating your illustration; how to take your practice outside.
