Pointed Pen and Ink for Calligraphy and Illustration
Have you ever wondered how to get high-contrast lines in your lettering or illustrations without use of fussy markers or expensive drawing pens? The answer is liquid ink!
This workshop is great for anyone who wants to learn how to use liquid ink for calligraphy, lettering art, line drawings, or comics.
You will learn:
How to use a pointed pen holder, nib, and ink;
How to create different kinds of calligraphy or drawing marks with these tools;
Properties of different types of ink and how to select one that is right for your needs.
All skill levels welcome! No previous calligraphy experience required for this workshop.
Pointed pen and ink calligraphy samples I created. Learn this style of modern calligraphy in my 101 and 201 classes in this series.
We will also have an opportunity to sample different kinds of ink, including:
Sumi ink
India ink (waterproof)
Oak Gall ink, Walnut ink, and Oregon Grape ink that I made myself from plant materials I harvested around the Portland region (read about my ink-making process here)
Bonus: Fintec gold watercolor paint, applied to the nib in lieu of ink!
Supplies needed: (all available from Tokki Art Supply)
Pointed pen straight nib holder (Speedball or similar)
G-type flexible nib (Nikki-G or similar)
Black calligraphy ink compatible with pointed pen (such as Sumi ink)
Pad of Smooth paper compatible with pointed pen and ink (Rhodia or similar; grid/graph or lined paper ok)
This workshop is the last of three in a series hosted by Tokki Art Supply in Hood River! Join me for one, or all three. See you there!
